Derby teacher Tammie Middendorf received a big surprise at a school assembly in the waning days of this school year.
The Oaklawn Elementary School first grade teacher received a check for $250 and was recognized as the Super Hero of the Month by Super Car Guys.
The community service award and check recognized Middendorf’s legacy of teaching and her efforts in cleanup and reconstruction following the April 14 Oaklawn tornado.
After the tornado, she spent the next three days helping her students and their families clean up their homes, in Oaklawn and surrounding areas.
Reception of this award means Middendorf is also eligible for a $2,500 award honoring community service.
Middendorf received her bachelors degree from Emporia State University in 1981, and her masters degree from Wichita State University in 1993.
She began her teaching career at Oaklawn Elementary in 1981.
