The Derby Planning Commission on Thursday listened to two hours of testimony – primarily against – before approving a zoning change for a new Menards.
The crux of the matter became the impact the zoning change has when McConnell Air Force Base is reviewed by federal government to see if communities around the base are encroaching on its territory, according to commissioners. While a base civil engineer who has worked extensively with the community encroachment issue said McConnell neither supports nor is against the zoning change, the base staff has worked extensively with the city to establish the zoning changes due to the Accident Potential Zone from aircraft.
The commission also approved the preliminary plat for the Menards Derby Addition and a special use permit for a future fire station location.
"The area was already zoned so that certain business's can build their. The people in the area knew of should have known that the open field was not going to stay that way. The zoning change just allows bigger use of the property. Menards will be a good business for Derby. "
