Former school para’s abuse trial delayed

By Linda Stinnett

The jury trial for a former employee of Derby Hills Elementary who is charged with aggravated indecent liberties of a child has been delayed until Sept. 10.

Alfred R. Rocheleau, 71, was formally charged Jan. 27 in Sedgwick County District Court. This is the second time the trial has been delayed. It had been scheduled to begin Monday.

According to the complaint filed in Sedgwick County District Court, the former school paraprofessional is charged with aggravated indecent liberties of a 4-year-old child. The single count against Rocheleau is a felony and occurred during 2011, according to the complaint.

The Derby Public Schools Board of Education terminated Rocheleau’s employment during its Jan. 23 meeting. Rocheleau worked one-on-one with students and in small group settings. The parents of those students have been personally notified of the allegations, according to Principal Debbie Sanders.

There has been no indication of any improper touching in the educational setting, both school officials and law enforcement said.
