Three recent Derby High School graduates will get a shot to compete in one last high school competition at the Kansas Shrine Bowl Cross Country All-Star Race at Emporia State University next Saturday.
Emily Hornbeck, Amber Green and Lindsay Cuadra, all 2012 DHS graduates, will compete in a road race featuring the state’s top runners from the 2012 graduating high school class. The race will end at Welch Stadium at the start of the 39th Annual Shrine Bowl football game.
All three athletes had storied running careers during their time at DHS. Both Hornbeck and Green medaled four times at the Class 6A state meet, entering the record books together as the only Derby girls to accomplish the feat. Both were also on the 2008 Class 6A state title cross country team.
Hornbeck placed fourth individually at the state meet this past year – the highest finish for a girl in DHS history. She was also the regional and AVCTL Division I champion.
Green placed 15th at state, fourth at regionals and third in the AVCTL meet this past season.
Cuadra was 11th in the AVCTL, 13th at regionals and 71st at state. She was also an alternate on the 2008 state team.
All three signed to run for four-year universities this fall. Hornbeck will compete at Wichita State University, Green at Pittsburg State University and Cuadra at Emporia State University.
